Why do so many pregnant women suffer leg and foot cramps?

Having had the opportunity to work with a number of pregnant women, providing the support of Pregnancy Massage I can honestly say that just about all of them at some point has complained of leg and/or foot cramps.

Why is this such a common complaint for expectant mothers?  The answer is “the baby”.  That might not make sense at first or seem silly, but let me explain.

Particularly during the second trimester when the baby is developing bones and muscles it draws a large amount of calcium, potassium and magnesium from mum to provide the building materials it needs.  This can lead to a mild deficiency for the mother which in turn can cause the muscles of the extremities to cramp and spasm.  Although uncomfortable this is normal and most women find that their calcium, potassium and magnesium levels return to normal following birth.

In the mean time this is where Pregnancy Massage can help.  It can help soothe and relax tense muscles in the legs and aid in improving circulation.
