Top 5 tips to get the most from your workout

There are many ways to improve your workout and get the most from your time in the gym.  Here are our top 5 tips to help you achieve your goals.

  1. Stretch and Warm Up
Stretching and warming up may seem like an obvious one but it’s one that is often missed.  Going into the gym and going straight into the hard work can be enticing not only for providing a sense of achievement but also as a time saver.  It’s a false economy in the long run.  Preparing the body to work out through appropriate cardio warm up and stretching of the muscles is vital to not only improve your performance but prevent injury.  Just remember, if you tear a muscle it will take months to get back to where you are now.  Look after your body and you will be able to maintain and improve your routine in the long term.
  2. Drink Plenty
Blood is what carries fuel to your muscles and takes away the metabolic waste when you workout. If you are dehydrated, it is harder for your heart to pump your blood and therefore it is harder for your blood to move around and do its job.  Sipping water before and during your workout will help keep you hydrated through your programme.  How better to improve your workout then to make sure you have fuel travelling to your muscles?!
  3. Don’t overdo it
You are in the groove and just want to run that bit faster or lift that little bit more – we have all be there but the key is to make sure that your addition isn’t too much. Incremental and sustainable improvement is the goal.  If you are going from 6 months of being a dedicated couch surfer to trying to run the minute mile we know it’s going to end up badly with injury.  Certainly enjoy the challenge of attaining a goal, just take the steps to get there sensibly.
  4. Rest
Working hard means a rest is required. There is a need for your body to rest in order to be able to heal.  It doesn’t necessarily mean you need to spend a day in bed, but certainly have a light day of exercise at the gym in between your full out sessions.  It’s also important to maintain a balanced sleep routine to help keep you at your best.  Being refreshed and full of energy will make it that bit easier to keep up with your exercise programme.
  5. Massage
It would be a surprise if we didn’t include this in here! Massage has benefits in not just assisting with relief following an injury or strain but can also help with building muscle flexibility and achieving quicker recovery from exertion.  Massage helps to lengthen and tone muscle fibre while improving circulation and helping your blood to remove metabolic waste from your system.
